Applying for the NDIS is called making an access request. Here are the steps.
Step 1: Check if you are eligible
Use NDIS Check. It takes 1 minute and shows if the NDIS could help.
Start NDIS CheckStep 2: Gather your evidence
- Proof of your age, like a birth certificate or passport.
- Proof you live in Australia as a citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder.
- Letters or reports about the disability from your doctor or other health professionals.
- Recent information about how the disability affects daily life.
Evidence from someone who knows you well, and has seen you recently, helps the most.
Step 3: Make your access request
You can apply by filling in an Access Request Form, or by contacting the NDIA. A local area coordinator or early childhood partner can also help. We can help you get ready, in your language.
Step 4: Wait for the decision
The NDIA aims to decide within 21 days of getting everything it needs. If it asks for more information, you will have time to send it. If you can join, you become an NDIS participant.
Step 5: Make your plan
Next is a planning meeting. You talk about your goals and the help you need. Then the NDIA approves your NDIS plan and its funding. See how much NDIS funding you could get.
What if the answer is no?
You can ask for a review of the decision. Ask within 3 months of getting the decision in writing. You can also apply again later with new evidence.
Tips for a strong NDIS application
- Describe a typical day, including your hard days.
- Ask your doctor or therapist to explain how the disability affects daily life, not just the diagnosis.
- Keep copies of everything you send.
- Ask for an interpreter if you need one. It is free.
